JohnBoy Walton and his family were visiting Walton cousins in the next county. Martha Corinne (long a widow), son Boone, and married grandson Wade, lived in a cabin, and mostly, off of the land. Wade, a US Navy veteran and his wife were expecting a child.
The government of Virginia had contracted to develop a road across the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Martha Corinne's land and house were smack in the way. Martha Corinne and family were determined to defend their property, and their guns were in their hands. Something had to be done!
Taking a break from their watching, Wade and JohnBoy went to the location Wade had chosen to build his own family home. They imagined each room's location. John said something about Wade's wood carving (which he had seen earlier), and he called Wade an 'artist'. Wade was appreciative, and said to JohnBoy, who was already growing as a writer . . .

LAWYERS AND POLITICIANS,
WE'LD BE BETTER OFF" . . .
We had seen this Waltons episode before, and heard this conversation. This time, it rang more clearly, and urgently, than ever before.
Going back to before the American Revolution, the purposes of overbearing government with their hired guns, caused the American colonists to highly value their ability to keep and bear arms. This caused the Founders, composing the Bill of Rights, to put this matter as the Second Amendment to our Constitution.
There are times when a person, a family, finds it best to back down from their position, and put away their rifles. Then again, there are times when he (they) need to exercise that right.
So, they strengthen themselves in their faith, in their trust in God and their destiny as Americans . . .
AND IN THAT STRENGTH, THEY STAND!
